Jardiniëres "Blumenkubel"

A pair of large Chinese porcelain jardiniëres, thickly potted with bulbous sides curved inwards towards the lipped rim. They have an impressed foliate design and are decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. The body has four rectangular panels, indented at each corner, decorated with pagodas and figures in a landscape, alternating with depictions of the various vases on low tables. Around the rim and base are cartouches in the shape of pomegranates and ruyi-heads. The cartouches around the rim have alternate scenes of phoenixes and flower sprays. Around the base the panels have white scrolling flowers on a blue ground. They have a drainage hole in the bottom, which was made later when they arrived in Europe. They have no numbers or labels on the unglazed base.
