Coin Sculpture

These coins were once buried in a wooden box, which has disintegrated over time, leaving the coins corroded together as an impressive solid block. Due to the natural corrosion, the coins have developed a bright and beautiful coating. The colours range from rouge red to emerald green and sapphire blue, adding beauty and depth to the sculpture. Money which accompanied the deceased in graves, was symbolic of largesse and wealth and appeased the gods and ancestors. These Tang Dynasty coins were known as Yong Quan Tong Huo and were cast during a period of nearly 300 years. This common currency was uniform in size and weight facilitating trade across the country. Each coin was deemed to be 8 fan in diameter and 2.4 zhu in weight. 1.000 coins weighed 6 jin 4 liang.
