Soapstone Writing Box

A Large Huanghuali wood box, the exterior decorated with carved and stained soapstone panels with gilding. The box has copper nails, lock-plate and handles – possibly made in Europe. Each panel depicts a different scene embellished with gilding and pigments.

The larger main panel on the lid depicts figures in a garden landscape, surrounded by panels with mythical beasts, flowers and vases with hundred treasures. The front panels also have scenes with figures in a garden. The sides have vases, flowers and fruits. The back has two river scenes and an unusual larger scene with fish and shells.

The inside cover lacquered with a scene of birds amongst flowers, divided into compartments to the interior. The lacquered wood stand is of a later date.
